Trust for London supports leading experts in youth and conflict to ensure the voices of young people are heard as part of the response to the recent violence
The riots which started in London and which spread to other parts of the UK are the most serious we have witnessed since the 1980s. There are many differing views as to why this has happened and who is responsible. As an independent funder tackling poverty and inequality in the capital we feel it is critically important that there is a better understanding of the causes behind the recent violence.
As a first step we have been approached by leading organisations working with young people on issues of conflict and criminal justice to fund work to analyse what has happened, why it has happened, and developing constructive ways forward.
The purpose of the work we are funding is to:
- Contribute to the immediate prevention of further violence and unrest.
- Speak to and listen to people who have participated in the riots. To understand why they got involved and what the future implications are.
- Develop the voice of the young people who chose not to be involved in the violence.
- Create a constructive and sustainable response.
The work is being led by Leap Confronting Conflict and Khulisa UK and involves a number of other organisations including London Youth, Foyer Federation and Street League.
